Madagascar pochard/Alaotraand - Madagascar
Taken in captivity. This species is endemic to Madagascar, and was for many years thought to be extint with the last sighting in 1991. In 2006, a few birds were rediscovered in a remote lake system where in 2011 counted 29 individuals. The Wildfowl and Wetland Trust, the Peregrine fund and the Durell Wildlife Conservation Trust, started a rescue mission and collected 3 clutches that successfully hatched 20 eggs. The birds on the picture are of those. The breeding programme seems successful, but the species is still considered the rarest duck in the world. It is critically endangered.
